How NumeroPath works

A guided tour of what happens when you type a name into the box.

The input

You give us a first name — yours, your child's, the protagonist of your novel, anyone. Internally, we strip everything that is not a letter, normalize it to upper case, and look it up against our archive of over 11,500 first names drawn from every year of the U.S. Social Security Administration's national records since 1880 (anyone with at least a thousand lifetime U.S. births makes the list). If the name is in the archive, we serve a pre-computed page with the full reading; if not, our calculator computes it on the fly.

The calculation

Each letter receives a value from 1 to 9 according to the Pythagorean alphabet. We sum the letters three different ways — all letters, just the vowels, just the consonants — and reduce each sum to a single digit, preserving the master numbers 11, 22, and 33.

This produces the three core name numbers: the Expression (all letters), the Soul Urge (vowels only), and the Personality (consonants only). For full transparency, every name page also publishes the equivalent Chaldean Expression Number so you can see how the older tradition would read the same name.

The interpretation

For each number, we provide a long-form character study, plus targeted notes on what the number tends to look like in career, in love, and as a deeper life calling. These interpretations are drawn from the modern Western tradition — primarily the body of work that flows from the early-twentieth-century writers who consolidated numerology into the form most readers encounter today.

Where helpful, we also surface other names that share the same Expression Number, so you can triangulate the meaning of a number across many different people you may have known.

What we don't do

  • We don't predict the future. Numerology is a language for self-reflection, not a forecast.
  • We don't promise that two people with matching numbers are destined to be together — or apart.
  • We don't sell a "premium" reading. Every page is fully accessible without payment.

A worked example

Take the name Aurora. The letters break down as A(1) + U(3) + R(9) + O(6) + R(9) + A(1) = 29. We reduce 29 → 2+9 = 11, and because 11 is a master number we preserve it. Aurora carries an Expression Number of 11 — the Illuminator, the intuitive channel. The vowels alone (A, U, O, A) sum to 1+3+6+1 = 11 → preserved master, so the Soul Urge is also 11. The consonants (R, R) sum to 9+9 = 18 → 1+8 = 9, so the Personality is 9. The full reading: an unusual triple-loaded master Expression and Soul Urge, with a humanitarian Personality. A name whose underlying vibration tends to call its bearers toward intuitive or contemplative vocations.

Now take James. J(1) + A(1) + M(4) + E(5) + S(1) = 12 → 1+2 = 3. The Expression is 3. The vowels (A, E) sum to 1+5 = 6, so the Soul Urge is 6. The consonants (J, M, S) sum to 1+4+1 = 6, so the Personality is 6. A communicative public-facing 3 carried on a doubled 6 of devoted care. Compare these two readings: same alphabet, same rules, completely different lives invited.

How a name page is laid out

Every one of the 11,542 names in the archive receives the same structure: a chip row of the three core numbers, the letter-by-letter breakdown table, an extended essay on the Expression Number (gifts, archetype, shadow, career fit, relationships, life purpose, and an affirmation to work with), a separate section on the Soul Urge as it lives in that particular name, a section on the Personality, a compatibility block showing the most natural harmonies and most productive tensions, and a sidebar of related names that share the same Expression or Soul Urge. Each name page also publishes its Chaldean Expression Number for comparison, so the reader can see where the two great Western traditions agree and where they diverge.

How a number page is laid out

Every one of the 12 number pages (1 through 9 plus the masters 11, 22, and 33) is a long-form character study of that vibration: the historical lineage of the number across world traditions, the archetypal portrait, the number as Expression, Soul Urge, Personality, Life Path, and as a birthday vibration, the career fits, the relationship dynamics, the compatibility map, the shadow side, the deeper life purpose, an affirmation for daily practice, and a paginated browse of every first name in the archive whose Expression resolves to that number.

How we keep the site honest

Three editorial commitments are absolute. First, every calculation on the site can be reproduced by hand using the rules published in our methods reference; if you cannot reproduce a number, that is a bug, not a feature, and we want to hear about it. Second, we do not sell a "personalized" upgrade — every page is the whole reading we have. Third, we are transparent about scope: numerology is a language for self-reflection, and we will not pretend it is a forecast, a diagnosis, or a substitute for the kinds of counsel a difficult life decision actually requires.
